Research progress in ketogenic diet and tumor treatment
Ketogenic diet(KD)is a dietary regimen characterized by a high proportion of fat, extremely low carbohydrates, and moderate protein intake. The main source of body calories is shifted to ketone bodies, which were first successfully applied to the treatment of refractory epilepsy by"simulating hunger.Due to the high glucose dependence of tumor cells and mitochondrial functional defects,KD exerts anti-tumor effects through various pathways such as enhancing oxidative stress, suppressing inflammation,enhanc-ing immune response, and inhibiting glucose/insulin.However,it has also been found in the literature that KD can accelerate the risk of disease progression in tumors such as lung, colorectal, and liver cancers. This suggests that KD and tumor therapy are still controver-sial,so the study of its potential molecular mechanisms may have some application value. This article mainly reviews the research prog-ress on anti-cancer and tumor-promoting effects of KD,adverse reactions in clinical application, and precautions to be taken during the clinical application of KD.
