Expression and immunologic role of ITGAL in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma
Objective This study aims to explore the expression and immunologic role of integrin αL(ITGAL)in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma(HNSCC).Methods Using public databases, patients were divided into ITGAL high expression group and ITGAL low expression group according to the median expression of ITGAL,and the expression and prognostic value of IT-GAL in HNSCC were analyzed. The effect of ITGAL on immune cell infiltration and tumor microenvironment was explored.Patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma who were treated at Jiangsu University Hospital from October 2016 to April 2024 were selected and the differential expression of ITGAL protein in cancer tissues and their paired paracancerous tissues was verified by immunohistochemis-try.Results The expression of ITGAL mRNA and protein in HNSCC cancer tissues is significantly higher than that in adjacent tis-sues(P<0.01),and is related to the improvement of patient survival rate(P<0.05);the upregulation of ITGAL mRNA was associated with enhanced infiltration of anti-tumor immune cells (e.g.,CD8+T cells and CD20+B cells) in tumor tissues(P<0.000).The expression of ITGAL mRNA was also positively correlated with chemokine genes (CXCL9,CXCL10),immune activation genes(PRF1,IFNG)and checkpoint genes(CTLA-4)(P<0.000);the expression of ITGAL pro-tein in cancer tissues[8.00(4.00-9.00)]was significantly higher than that in adjacent tissues[3.00(1.00-6.00)],and the difference was sta-tistically significant(P<0.000).Conclusion ITGAL is highly ex-pressed in HNSCC and may serve as a promising biomarker and pro-vide new perspectives for antitumor therapy.
