Advances on hydrogel drug delivery systems in the treatment of osteosarcoma
Osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignant bone tumor in children and adolescents, characterized by high invasiveness, rapid progression to pulmonary or systemic metastasis within a short period, high recurrence rates and poor prognosis. The systematic and standardized treatment regimen for osteosarcoma includes neoadjuvant chemotherapy, surgery, and postoperative radio-therapy and chemotherapy.Due to the lack of bone targeting, traditional chemotherapy drugs often cannot accumulate at the site of osteo-sarcoma,necessitating the use of high-dose medications, which inevitably leads to related systemic adverse reactions.Local administra-tion through hydrogel drug delivery systems can effectively increase local drug concentration, prolong drug retention time, reduce sys-temic adverse reactions, decrease frequency of administration, and improve patient compliance. This paper mainly reviews the applica-tion of hydrogel drug delivery systems in the treatment of osteosarcoma in recent years.
