Based on a new public health perspective,this article explores the concept,origin content,features,assessment tools,cultivation modes,and development prospects of death literacy.Improved death literacy contributes to the normalization of communication and practises related to end-of-life in the community,and supports communities in preparing for hospice and end-of-life care.The development of death literacy in China should take into account the social and cultural context,further enrich its cultural connotation,develop appropriate assessment scales,and pay attention to cultivating and practising the relevant knowledge and skills.In addition,social and public health interventions tailored to the Chinese cultural context,such as advance care planning,death cafés and online death education,should be designed to promote death literacy at the societal level and help communities better deal with communication,decision-making,and actions related to end-of-life and death.
