Medical Discourse and Disease Metaphors in Zhou Wenjing's Artworks
Disease has always been purified by medical discourse as a universal intellectual rationality, and it has become a challenge to find individual life phenomena behind the surface of disease.Feminist artist Zhou Wenjing, however, uses the"body with illness"as an entry point to articulate what medical science has overlooked and concealed, and to deeply analyze the invisible parts of the disease phenomenon and abnormal body.By invoking the female experience,Zhou Wenjing's artistic practice reframes diseases not as an inevitability towards"death",but rather a response to the possibility of how to better"live"in the experience of pain, and calls for a common respect for life and medicine in specific situations.
