Nagoya Gen'i and the Independence of Japanese Kampo Medicine
Nagoya Gen'i,through the revival of traditional medicine and criticism of Jin Yuan medicine, first challenged the authoritative position of Chinese medicine in Japan, subsequently breaking its dominance.Furthermore,he proposed regulations for medical ethics with the aim of distinguishing Kampo medicine from Chinese medicine and establishing its independence. From a historical perspective, the tradition of"following a set routine"in Edo period was the essential reason for the revival of medical practices. The motivation behind constructing a new medical system during the Edo period was,to a greater extent, driven by the desire to prove the establishment of the concept"Wa Shōkan"(Japanese medicine triumphed over Chinese medicine). From the perspective of the dissemination of academic trends,Gen'i was significantly inspired by Chinese Incorrect Simplification and Tonification schools.Gen'i's reflections on medicine, breaking the absolute dependence of Kampo medicine on traditional Chinese medical practices, profoundly contributed to the construction of the Koho-ha School's medical system.
