The Establishment and Development of Public Health Discipline in Modern China
With the influx of Western knowledge into China during the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, several medical schools introduced basic courses in hygiene. After the establishment of Peking Union Medical College,in October 1924,John.B.Grant established the Department of Hygiene and Public Health, creating an integrated curriculum in public health with a focus on prevention and a combination of theory and practice, forming an independent discipline of public health. In the 1930s,the Ministry of Education of Nanjing National Government standardized the public health curriculum based on the Peking Union Medical College experience and promoted it to medical schools nationwide.By the 1940s,major medical schools across the country had basically set up departments of public health. On the whole, the discipline of public health in modern China has gone through the development from a hygiene course to an independent discipline, but due to political and social factors, the number of trained professionals was insufficient to meet societal health needs, hindering improvements in overall health levels.
