Life and Its Milieu:The Ariadne's Thread in Georges Canguilhem's Philosophy of Life
This paper deals with the relationship between life and its milieu in the philosophy of Georges Canguilhem.Despite being a relatively overlooked topic by researchers,we could use this thread to explain almost all of Canguilhem's important concepts and ideas. The paper is divided into three parts:the first part deals with the origin of the concept of milieu, and the second part analyzes how Canguilhem applies his unique philosophy of evolution to understand the relationship between life and its milieu, between the normal and the pathological,by comparing neo-Lamarckism and neo-Darwinism.In the third part,Canguilhem's vitalist stance leads him to develop the concept of the dynamic polarity of life.He goes on to extend this analysis to the relationship between the social environment and the individual, yielding highly inspiring intellectual achievements.
