New Perspective on Teacher-Student Relationship in Traditional Chinese Medicine Based on Collection of Inscriptions of Famous Physicians Throughout Chinese History
This paper explores the influencing factors and characteristics of the ancient teacher-student relationship in Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)to provide insights for the establishment of contemporary educational relationships between TCM teachers and students.By coding the relevant statements from Collected Inscriptions of Famous Physicians Throughout Chinese History,textual analysis methods are used to construct a model of the teacher-student relationship in TCM,following the sequence of pre-apprenticeship,apprenticeship,and post-departure phases.There are five factors influencing the teacher-student relationship in TCM directly or indirectly:the importance and difficulty of apprenticeship,students'principal status in learning,guidance and assistance from a teacher,the daily interactions between teacher and student,expression and commitment upon departure,which are featured by selecting mutually before apprenticeship,following a teacher as a guide,recalling a teacher and self-motivation after departure.From the perspective of psychological contracts,teacher-student interactions and commitments,the impact on the medical profession for both teachers and students is explored,and the enlightenment to the construction of modern teacher-student relationships in TCM has been pointed out.
