Research Progress on Withdrawal of Life-sustaining Treatment in ICU Hospice Care
This paper elucidates three aspects regarding the transition from life-sustaining treatment to comfort care, the process of withdrawing life-sustaining treatment, and factors that may influence the decision to withdraw life-sustaining treatment. It is found that the prognostic tools can help doctors to some extent determine whether discussions about end-of-life care are needed.Withdrawing life-sustaining treatment is a difficult decision for both family members and healthcare professionals, and shared decision-making can help achieve consensus among families, patients, doctors, and nurses.Additionally, withdrawing life-sustaining treatment faces challenges such as decision conflicts, ethical dilemmas, and significant variations in specific clinical practices, requiring comprehensive considerations from medical, ethical, legal, and other perspectives.
