A Research Review of Contingent Self-esteem and Its Impact on Mental Health
This review summarizes research on contingent self-esteem,highlighting its formation, influencing factors, and developmental changes. The level of contingent self-esteem decreases with adulthood, but it can remain at a higher level due to factors such as unsafe attachment, conditional parental attention, imbalanced levels of internal-external contingent self-esteem,social culture factors, and increased allocation of cognitive resources for negative information.Individuals with higher levels of contingent self-esteem are more likely to develop emotional, behavioral, and personality disorders. In psychotherapy, methods such as improving parenting styles, enhancing self-awareness,and cognitive-behavioral therapy can be used to reduce the level of contingent self-esteem and prevent harm to mental health.
