The Republic of China era marked a crucial transition period for traditional Chinese medicine from tradition to modernity.This article examines reports from Japanese Kampo journals in the 1930s and 1940s to depict the landscape of the traditional Chinese medicine industry from a Japanese perspective,and reveals the exploration and reflections of traditional Chinese medicine circles in China and Japan in the modern transformation period.The traditional Chinese medicine industry in the Republic of China era was characterized by deep cultural roots,flourishing trade in medicinal herbs,sophisticated pharmaceutical processes,and innovative efforts among medical professionals.These insights challenged the image of conservatism and backwardness often associated with traditional Chinese medicine since the Meiji Restoration,showcasing its profound cultural richness and distinctive characteristics.Moreover,the progressive spirit within the traditional Chinese medicine community provided significant encouragement to the Kampo community,which had experienced a long period of decline,laying a solid foundation for modern exchanges between Chinese and Japanese traditional medical communities.
