Lavier's Interpretation of the Five Elements Theory in Traditional Chinese Medicine
The theory of the Five Elements is the foundation of traditional Chinese culture, and is applied in various fields such as Chinese medicine, agriculture, architecture, astronomy, and the arts. With the spread of Eastern Studies introduced to the West, the Five Elements theory entered the vision of Westerners.Lavier, the French sinologist of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM),using ancient Chinese ancient philology as his methodology, studied ancient Chinese astronomy, the Book of Changes, and the Yellow Emperor's Internal Classic to understand the underlying Chinese philosophy and theory, and applied them to the practice of TCM.Lavier utilized the Western deductive method, combined with traditional Chinese symbolic thinking,to explain the characteristics, movement directions, relationship between generation and restriction, celestial stems, and the relationships between the internal organs associated with the Five Elements. His work made the theory more accessible to Western audiences and helped spread its understanding in the West.
