Discussion on Issues Related to the Application of Conversational Artificial Intelligence in Psychotherapy
The emergence of conversational artificial intelligence(CAI)has coincided almost simultaneously with attempts to use it as a psychotherapeutic tool. With breakthrough in generative artificial intelligence(AI)and the needs of the mental health field, there has been an increasing amount of research, requiring attention to ethical issues surrounding human-computer relationship and clarification of roles.CAI plays a hybrid role between a tool and an agent, functioning as a potential agent that collaborates with humans as full complete agent in order to share agency.Although complete understanding is impossible,CAI can"understand"patients more effectively through interaction, offering personalized attention;it encourages patient responses and guides them toward self-understanding.A cooperative relationship rooted in the ethics of care may form between humans and AI,where both engage in complex situations and dynamic networks through asymmetric reciprocity, requiring continuous adjustment and shared responsibility from all agents involved.
