Objective To summarize the preliminary experience of Altemeier-like procedure for the treatment of stomal prolapse, and to explore a safe, simple, and effective surgical treatment for stomal prolapse. Methods The general clinical data, surgical situation, and curative effect of 6 patients with stomal prolapse who underwent Altemeier-like procedure in Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery,Xijing Hospital in the past 10 years were retrospectively analyzed. Results Six patients with stomal prolapse underwent Altemeier-like procedure for prolapse resection and stomal reconstruction. The operative time was 25-50 min,and the intraoperative blood loss was 5-10 mL.Postoperative mucosal bleeding of the reconstructed stoma was conservatively cured in 1 case, and no postoperative complications occurred in other cases. The hospital stay was 2-5 d after surgery. There was no recurrence at 4-,12-and 24-month follow-up via telephone. Conclusion Altemeier-like procedure for stomal prolapse is safe, effective, and minimally invasive, with a low recurrence rate.It is particularly suitable for elderly patients with complex underlying diseases, advanced tumors,or with severe malnutrition, who are vulnerable to surgery and anesthesia.
