Objective To use cone beam computed tomography(CBCT)to study the anatomical structure of dentition and root canals in maxillary first molars,so as to provide data support for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of maxillary first molars.Methods Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria,a total of 401(196 males and 205 females)healthy individuals aged 18 to 25 years with intact maxillary first molars were selected as the study objects.CBCT imaging technique was used to collect the requisite data,and SmartVPro software was used to measure and analyze the tooth and root canal morphology.SPSS 26.0 software was used for statistical analysis.Results The average length of the right maxillary first molar was(20.22±1.72)mm,and the average length of the left maxillary first molar was(20.24±1.74)mm.There were no significant differences in total length,crown width,and neck width between left and right maxillary first molars(P>0.05).However,the left maxillary first molar was found to have a significantly greater crown length,root length,crown thickness,and neck thickness in comparison to the right maxillary first molar(P<0.05).The total length,root length,crown thickness,neck thickness,crown width,and neck width were found to be significantly larger in males compared to females(P<0.05).The root canal morphology in the left and right maxillary first molars revealed symmetrical characteristics,with the triple-root type being the most common,accounting for 98.75%,followed by the double-root type at 1.25%.The majority of cases exhibited four root canals(63.47%),followed by three root canals(35.78%),with an incidence of second mesiobuccal canal at 63.84%.The majority of proximal buccal were identified as Vertucci type Ⅳ,accounting for 62.59%and 64.59%of the left and right maxillary first molars,respectively.The distal buccal and palatal root canals were predominantly categorized as Vertucci type Ⅰ,accounting for 97.00%of the distal buccal root canals Vertucci type Ⅰ.The palatal root canals Vertucci type Ⅰ of the left and right maxillary first molars accounted for 98.75%and 98.50%,respectively.Conclusion The morphology of maxillary first molars is significantly different between the sexes,and the root canal system is complex and variable.The relevant data are expected to provide guidance for the prevention and treatment of endodontic disease of maxillary first molars.
