Feasibility analysis of non-medical caregivers using the Barthel index for scoring activities of daily living of stroke patients
Objective To probe feasibility analysis of non-medical caregivers using the Barthel index(BI)for scoring activities of daily living of stroke patients. Methods A total of 134 stroke patients were selected from three rehabilitation departments of three hospitals in Shenzhen.Six reha-bilitation therapists, six interns, and six nursing workers were divided into six scoring groups on average, and the consistency and correlation of BI scores of different evaluators and the same evaluator on day one and day seven were analyzed. Results There was no significant difference in BI scores by the different assessors on day one and day seven(P>0.05);the BI total scores of the three types of evaluators were consistent with each other. The mean difference between therapist and caregiver on day one and day seven was 3.8 and 0.5,95%CI was(-17.3 to 24.8)and(-14.8 to 25.9),respectively.The mean difference between therapist and intern on day one and day seven was-0.2 and-1.1,respectively,and 95%CI was(-21.9 to 20.7)and(-15.6 to 13.3),respectively.The mean difference between interns and caregivers on day one and day seven was 3.9 and 1.8,95%CI was(-18.8 to 26.6)and(10.7 to 14.2),respectively;the internal consistency of BI evaluation score of the three types of evaluators was better.Therapists and carers have good or very good agreement with the rest of the entries except for"dressing"on day one and"grooming"on day seven, there was a good agreement between interns and caregivers except for the"bed chair transfer"on day one;there was a significant correlation be-tween the total BI scores of different categories of evaluators on day one and day seven(P<0.05).Conclusion Medical staff and caregivers had high consistency in using BI,which suggests that caregivers can effectively use the BI to assess stroke patients'activity of daily living.
