Status quo and countermeasures into the English translation problems of traditional Chinese medicine terms in doctoral theses abstracts
Objective To make a research on the traditional Chinese medicine terms in the abstracts of doctoral theses, identify prevalent English translation problems of terms, and propose potential countermeasures based on the problems observed in the bilingual doctoral theses abstracts. Methods A total of 270 abstracts of traditional Chinese medicine doctoral theses from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine from 2017 to 2021 were retrieved from China National Knowledge Infrastructure.A total of 34 abstracts written by ethnic language and 90 without traditional Chinese medicine terms were excluded, and finally 146 abstracts were included.A total of 852 traditional Chinese medicine terms were collected from 146 abstracts. The standard English translation on traditional Chinese medicine terms issued by the World Health Organization, the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies, and the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine were taken as references, and a classification and sta-tistical analysis of the problems in terms translations were conducted. Results Over half of the researched theses had an error rate of 50%or higher in their abstracts, and among the 852 terms,408 were translated correctly, while 444 incorrectly.Of the 444 incorrect translated terms,243(54.73%)were mistranslated,107(24.10%)involved excessive transliteration, and 94(21.17%)were left untranslated. Conclusion The current overall translation error rate is alarmingly high and has not significantly improved over the past five years.A collaborative effort is required to im-prove the quality of English translations of abstracts.
