Human immunodeficiency virus-related stigma and discrimination among nursing interns and its influencing factors
Objective To investigate the human immunodeficiency virus-related stigma and discrimination of nursing in-terns,and analyze its influencing factors. Methods In June 2023,305 nursing interns who completed clinical practice in Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College were investigated online using the general data questionnaire and the medical staff stigma and discrimination scale against people living with HIV(PLWH).Pearson corre-lation matrix was used to explore the correlation of each dimension of the scale.Multiple linear regression analysis was con-ducted to analyze the influencing factors of HIV-related stigma and discrimination among nursing interns. Results A total of 273 valid questionnaires were collected, with scores of(15.66±2.42)points for medical hesitation degree,(16.99±2.80)points for PLWH stigma,(5.17±1.23)points for awareness of protection,and(9.48±2.73)points for worry about HIV in-fection.Gender was negatively correlated with medical hesita-tion(r=-0.251,P<0.05),infection control and prevention training was positively correlated with medical hesitation(r=0.318,P<0.05).infection ward internship experience was neg-atively correlated with PLWH stigmatization(r=-0.182,P<0.05),and nursing experience with PLWH was positively corre-lated with PLWH stigmatization(r=0.185,P<0.05).Education,infection ward practice experience and nursing PLWH were positively correlated with the awareness of protection(r=0.158,0.255.0.179,P<0.05),while the training of bias and dis-crimination in HIV key groups was negatively correlated with the awareness of protection(r=-0.129,P<0.05).Infection ward internship experience, infection control and prevention training were positively correlated with the degree of worry about HIV infection(r=0.206,0.435,P<0.05).Gender,infection control and prevention training were the factors influenc-ing the degree of hesitation of nursing interns to provide medical services in PLWH(P<0.05).Infection ward internship ex-perience and nursing experience were the influencing factors of PLWH stigma(P<0.05).Educational background, infection ward internship experience, bias and discrimination training of HIV key groups and PLWH were the influencing factors of protection awareness(P<0.05).Infection ward internship experience, infection control and prevention training were the fac-tors influencing the degree of concern of nursing interns about HIV infection(P<0.05).Conclusion HIV-related stigma and discrimination is prevalent among nursing interns and is affected by relevant infection ward internship experience, training and work content.Relevant intervention strategies should be implemented to reduce nursing interns'stigma and discrimination on PLWH,to ensure that PLWH have equal access to medical conditions.
