Research progress on the pathogenesis of conjunctivochalasis
Conjunctivochalasis is a common ocular disease that causes eye discomforts, such as tearing, due to excessive relaxation of bulbar conjunctiva and/or high tension at the lower lid margin. It is often overlooked in clinic as a normal geriatric change. The pathogenesis of conjunctivochalasis is complex and has not been fully understood. The factors such as aging, imbalance of matrix metalloproteinases and their inhibitors, inflammatory response, elastin degeneration, and collagen fiber dissolution are closely related to the occurrence and development of conjunctivochalasis, and there are multiple factors that interact with each other. Therefore, further understanding the pathogenesis of conjunctivochalasis is essential for diagnosing and treating. This article aims to review the research progress on the pathogenesis of conjunctivochalasis in recent years.
