There is no consensus on the characteristics,theoretical status and research methods of Chinese middle constructions,and its definitional and positioning problems need to be proved.In the background of Construction Grammar(CxG),this article discusses the semantic basis and structural rationale of middle constructions based on cross-language com-parison.It finds that middle construction can be divided into the property explicit middle type and the implicit one,both of which share a common semantic basis for expressing the interactive relationship between"the property of things"and"the external force".In struc-ture,middle construction presents a unique way of dual information packaging mechanism,and this is the essence that distinguishes itself from the other constructions.We then define its connotation and extension,from which we establish the constructional network of Chi-nese middle construction.Taking this as the basic point of determination,this article analy-zes the logical consistency of the controversies on the characteristics of Chinese middle con-structions,demonstrates its theoretical foundation and realistic status,and makes new thinking on its research methods.
