Sentence patterns of verbs meaning"bet"in Mandarin and their cognitive foundation
This paper provides a description of sentence patterns framed by verbs"dadu"(打赌,bet)and the like based on the Theory of Cognitive Scene. The constituents of those patterns are constrained by the cognitive elements evoked by such verbs.Various pat-terns come from different mappings of the elements on the syntactic structures. Some ele-ments come out in the sequential clauses.Comparing the verbs with the correspondent verb"bet"in English,we find that they share some common patterns, and meanwhile retain some differences of their own.In addition, this paper argues that when we come into the re-search of co-occurrences of the verbs and their related elements, attention should be focused on a particular semantic unit of a word rather than the whole word.
