On the Linguistic Landscape of Historical and Cultural Districts——The Case of Jianghan Road Pedestrian Street in Wuhan City,Hubei Province
Based on the theoretical framework of place semiotics, this paper examined the linguistic landscape of Jianghan Road Pedestrian Street,a historical and cultural district in Wuhan City,Hubei Province, with a focus on the synergy between language and culture. The results reveal that:1)the linguistic landscape of the Street prioritizes the practical communicative function, with a secondary emphasis on conveying historical and cultural information;2)the linguistic landscape of the Street reflects its cultural positioning, highlighting local culture as its essence and utilizing foreign cultures for internationalization;3)the traditional historical culture embrace foreign cultures, and it distinguishes itself due to its regional character;the distinctive Jingchu Culture of Hubei, such as bronze and iron culture, religious culture, and Mulan culture, finds expression on the Street, serving as a significant platform for the preservation and promotion of local cultural heritage.Nevertheless, the linguistic landscape of the Street also exhibits some issues, including instances of excessive com-mercialization,incongruity between certain materials and the overall architectural layout of the district, and a lack of narrative descriptions.Consequently, continuous efforts are required from both the government and businesses to optimize the linguistic landscape, thereby fostering an enhanced cultural identity for Jianghan Road Pedestrian Street, and contributing to the cultural and economic construction of Wuhan City and Hubei Province.
