The Salt Transportation and Sales Network and Local Society in Shandong Province during the Ming and Qing Dynasties
In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the transportation of salt in Shandong Province was combined by water and land routes, which were intertwined with each other. Its transportation network includes three routes:one is to flow westward along the Daqing River or Xiaoqing River and distribute transportation at checkpoints, docks and salt warehouses along the route, such as Putai Batch Inspection Station,Luokou Batch Inspection Station,Nanqiao and Huangtai Bridge, then continue to flow by water along the river or by land routs to the north and south;the second is to transport goods up and down from Henan to the north, and distribute them at the customs, docks and salt warehouses along the canal, such as Acheng,Anju,Nanyang and Xiazhen, then continue to transport them by water along the river or by land to the east and west;the third is to transport salt by land from coastal salt fields to the domestic area directly, such as most destinations of Piao salt. The comprehensive transportation network of land and water not only ensures the salt supplication throughout Shandong,as well as some areas of Henan,Anhui and Jiangsu provinces, but also promotes local economic and social development.
