The Discovery of Salt Production Remains Dating from the Late Shang Dynasty to the Early Western Zhou Dynasty of Wudi County in Shandong Province
In recent years,a group of salt production sites of Shang-Zhou and Jin-Yuan periods has been discovered in Wudi County, located at the estuary of the ancient Yellow River and its tributaries.Notably,large-scale salt production sites dating from the late Shang to the early Western Zhou period have been firstly discovered in the northeast of Dengwang and the Fushanzi area. These salt production sites are extensive and distributed in clusters, spanning from various periods of the Yinxu(Shang Dynasty)to the early Western Zhou period, and they are comparable in age to those in neighboring areas such as Zhanhua and the southern coast of Laizhou Bay.Surveys and drilling have revealed underground brine pits and wells, large salt cook stoves, deposits of ash and red-burned earth from salt boiling, accumulations of helmet-shaped pottery fragments and various pit deposits. The scale, structure, and layout of these sites are similar to those in the southern part of Laizhou Bay,indicating that the salt production processes were also consistent.
