The opera The Lost(shangshi)based on Lu Xun's novel,premiered in the Autumn of 1981.Over four decades,it has become one of the popular repertoire of performance groups and higher education institutions across the country,enduring on the domestic opera stage.The success of The Lost primarily owes to the close cooperation between the composer and the playwright,enhancing each other.Artists innovatively created a u-nique Chinese-style opera structure divided into"four seasons"and employed the"sonata principle"for musical and dramatic developments and expressions,achieving a harmonious unity of operatic form and content on stage,contributing to the development of world opera.
