"Welcome the lights at the dam"is a Hakka Lantern Festival ritual that centres on welcoming and receiving lanterns as a way of ancestor worship during the Lantern Festival. This ceremony combines the Cen-tral Plains Han tradition of celebrating the Lantern Festival with the Hakka ideology of honouring ancestors through family expansion, creating a cross-cultural and virtual scenographic world. The various non-verbal and verbal sound symbols employed during the ceremony metaphorically reflect the deep structural relationships and cultural cognition concepts of Hakka society. As an"ethnic symbol"for the Hakka people, the sounds in the ceremony metaphorically express the Hakka's"Central Plains cultural complex"and their identity as Han people from the Central Plains. In the multi-ethnic,mixed-residence Hakka communities, such ethnic symbols are used by the Hakkas to define themselves, differentiate from others, unite, and collectively establish a re-gional cultural identity system for Hakka society.
