Mao Zedong's poems,which are artistically and politically excellent,exploit defamiliarization device and enjoy great popularity among readers.The successful representation of defamiliarization devices is essential to the translation of Mao's poems.From the perspective of defamiliarization,this paper takes the translations of Mao's poem To the Tune of Buddhist—Yellow Crane Tower by Nie Hualing and Paul Engel and by Xu Yuanchong as examples,and explores the defamiliarization devices in Mao's poems and their representation in the two translations from four aspects including phonetics,language,form and rhetoric.This study finds that the translation by Xu Yuanchong better retains and represents the effect of defamiliarization in the original poems compared with the version translated by Nie Hualing and her husband which adopts a free verse style.
