The Classification and Sources of Reformulation Markers in Modern Chinese
According to the motivations of word formation, modern Chinese reformulation markers are divided into two types:Xiyan(系言)and Huoyan(或言).The reformulation markers of Xiyan(系言)are such as"that is"and the reformulation markers of Huoyan(或言)are such as"in other words"etc. The evolution path of the two types of reformulation markers is different. The Xiyan(系言)type is the result of the natural evolution of Chinese, and it has been produced in the earliest pre-Qin(先秦)period;the typical members of the Huoyan(或言)type of reformulation markers are Huanyanzhi(换言之)and Huanjuhua shuo(换句话说),they may be a product of language contact, produced in the late Qing(清)Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China.
