A Syntactic and Semantic Analysis of the Progressive Relation Marker Jinyibu(进一步)and its Related Structures
Chinese standard complex sentences have the function of using correlative words to connect clauses and mark relationships.Meanwhile,some relational markers also have similar function,such as Jinyibu(进一步),representing progressive relationship.We analyzed Jinyibu(进一步)in the modern Chinese and the different usage of its related structures,and also explored its evolution and motivation from verb-complement structure to expressing progressive relationship at the diachronic level,the meaning constraint of the core verb"go forward"and the metaphor progress of Jinyibu(进一步)from the meaning of concrete physical actions to abstract as well as the change in its developing meaning,which are the important motivations for the formation of Jinyibu(进一步)progressive relationship.In the research,we find that Jinyibu(进一 步)and Tuiyibu(退一步)often appear together,and this usage plays a prominent role in highlighting and reinforcing the progressive meaning of Jinyibu(进一 步)and the concession meaning of Tuiyibu(退一步).
