Chinese sheng is the originator of world"free-reed mouth organ",not only with a profound influence on the same typed instruments of Japan,South and North Korea,but also as an important role in promoting the development of similar musical instruments of various ethnic minorities in China and many ethnic groups in Southeast Asia.This paper studies the khaen(paisheng)which is popular in Laos and northern Thailand.Through in-depth comparative analysis of its ethnic history,cultural attributes,shape,pitch position,production technology and performance characteristics,we can see that the predecessor of paisheng(sheng with a keyboard)is the"Grand Pausheng(grand gourd sheng)"of Pyu Kingdom in New Tang Book.The unique material selection and production process of Southeast Asian khaen will further promote the development of Chinese sheng,bring more profound thinking to the academic community,and inject new vitality into Chinese sheng.
