Discipline is the product of the institutional accumulation of knowledge production,and discipline governance is the process of promoting knowledge development through scientific and good governance.Discipline governance modernization is the foundation of China's university gov-ernance,and the modernization of higher education governance system and governance capacity will eventually start with the modernization of university discipline governance.Knowledge production mode has undergone a change from religious knowledge production to scientific knowledge produc-tion Mode Ⅰ,to social diffuse knowledge production Mode Ⅱ,and then to collaborative innovation knowledge production Mode Ⅲ,which has brought about a new trend of university discipline gov-ernance from single subject to pluralistic subjects,from closed to open culture,from a linear to flat structure,from authoritarian to consultative governance,and from internal to global resource allo-cation,meeting the requirements of discipline governance modernization.However,the moderniza-tion of university discipline governance in China still has problems such as unclear positioning of dis-cipline governance,overextended power,value conflict,and ecological imbalance.Therefore,it is necessary to restore the logic of discipline autonomy,stimulate the endogenous driving force of governance,promote multi-subject consultation and co-governance,reshape the governance structure of disciplines,break down disciplinary barriers and build a harmonious and symbi-otic ecosystem,explore digital governance and improve the efficiency of discipline govern-ance.
