Causes and consequences of diagnostic delay on epilepsy
Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder.Evidence suggest that epilepsy is a progressive disease.Epi-leptic patients have both paroxysmal symptoms and chronic health problems, such as development retardation in children, cognitive function disturbance, and declined quality of life.Early diagnosis and effective treatment may potentially come up to disappearance of seizure and improvement of quality of life.Numerous causes may pose to the delay of diagnosis,in-cluding:(1)decision delay(by patients and their families),primarily attributed to failure to recognize seizure as events that required medical assessment or other reasons;(2)referral delay(by primary doctor). The primary doctor delayed re-ferral to a specified hospital;(3)attendence delay,to specialist review;(4)disarrangement of the medical procedure.Consequences of diagnostic delay included:(1)missing the opportunity for standard management and potentially becoming intractable epilepsy;(2)adverse neuropsychological and psychiatric effects, such as stigma;(3)resulting in nonstandard treatment;(4)developmental and cognitive impairment in children;(5)trauma due to seizures;(6)negative effects on so-cial communication, education, and employment.
