Study of the Setting and Related Problems of the Stayed-behind in Honghua Prefecture in the Sui Dynasty
The Guanzhong(关中)region was the ruling center of the Sui and Tang Dynasties. In the northern side of Guanzhong, there were three river valleys running north-south,and these river valleys connected the Guanzhong with the outer frontier.Among these areas,Honghua Prefecture, which controlled the Maling Valley, was geographically very important due to its flat terrain and its location at multiple junctions, and became the main town of Maling valley and the barrier of Guanzhong.Since the Northern Wei Dynasty, dynasties had strengthened their defense in this place in order to defend the capital. The ninth year of DaYe of the Sui Dynasty,Emperor Yang set up the Stayed-behind of Honghwa,Li Yuan officed on this and commanded the troops of the 13 prefectures of Guanzhong and Longyou, thus forming a fan-shaped defense circle for the Chang-an,forming a double-layer defense system togethered with the capital city. This fully showed that Emperor Yang trusted Li Yuan. The defense system of Guanzhong in the Tang Dynasty, especially the Eight towns and governors set up by the central government in the northwest after the Rebellion of An-Shi,were all derived from this fan-shaped defense structure constructed by the Sui Dynasty.
