Borderland Affairs and Officials:Research on the Establishment and Abolition of Dingbian Jun(定边军)in the Tang Dynasty
The Dingbian Jun was set up by the Tang Dynasty in the eighth year of Xiantong to divide seven prefectures in the south of Xichuan. The purpose was to use the danger of mountains and rivers to resist the invasion of Nanzhao, and to overcome the the long road and slow response of the army in Cheng Du.However, since the establishment of the DingBian Jun,it had faced serious opposition and criticism, and its establishment and abolition have been attributed to the incompetence of borderland officials. In fact, under the pressure of Nanzhao invasion, the game among many political and military groups formed by complex geographical units in Xichuan area,as well as the political intention of the Tang central government to divide Xichuan and rebuild the"military and financial duality"of Xichuan,is the deep root cause of the frequent disposal of the borderland army.
