Local Powerful Clans in Annam and Regional Situation of Southern Frontier during the Tang Dynasty
After the unification of Lingnan in the Tang Dynasty the prefectures and counties were set up along the transportation line of southern frontier and also adopted Jimi System towards the tribes and local powerful clans,and changed Jiaozhou Dudu Fu(都督府)to Annam Duhu Fu(都护府)as the highest military and political office in managing the southern frontier region.In order to strengthen the control of southern frontier region,the Tang Dynasty intended to incorporate the southern frontier into the overall ruling order of the dynasty eventually through gradual measures,adjusting the management policies towards the southern frontier in the dual concerto of consolidating unity and strengthening centralization,promoting the integration of local society constantly.With the deepening of the prefecture and county system in the southern frontier,the contradiction between local officials and centrally-appointed nonhereditary officials evolved into conflict between the authority of the dynasty and the local powerful clan in the competitive power game,which deeply influenced the governance and development of the Annam Duhu Fu in the Tang Dynasty.
