Sha Salt Entering Yunnan:The Interaction between State and Local Society and Reflection on the Administration of Frontier—Taking Deqin County in the Late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China as an Example
During the Late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China periods, under the background of state's insufficient influence and limited governance measures, adding to the importance of salt in the borderlands and the complexity of local power relations, the Sha salt entering Yunnan led to the involvement of local chieftains, temples, military personnel, and officials in a power struggle centered around the exploitation of salt profits. The Deqin local governance was centered around the dispute over salt taxes and the maintenance of local order.Because of the inherent irrationality of the salt tax system, the government power was always in a passive state, which was not conducive to the stability of the local society.
