Chen Bisheng's Journey to Yunnan and Yunnan Frontier View
After the failure of the Fujian Incident in 1934,Chen Bisheng travelled to Yunnan to carry out investigations and research in the border areas.Under the background of the anti-Japanese war,Chen Bisheng hoped to open the passageway from Yunnan border to Southeast Asia and to devote himself to the cause of Yunnan-Burma transport construction in the rear area. After realising the lang-lasting of the war of resistance,Chen Bisheng also put forward the idea of the construction of Greater Yunnan, advocating the construction of the border areas from the perspective of national defence.Chen Bisheng's investigations and research on the Yunnan border were associated with a period of academic contacts with Gu Jiegang,Yu Youren,Fang Guoyu,as well as his participation in the polemics on the Minzu issue at that time, which had a certain impact on the early studies of China's frontier and nationality, and also was the starting point of his Southeast Asian studies and his research on the history of the overseas Chinese in South Asia.
