New Exploration of Sanjiang Duhu's Jurisdiction Areas in Lingnan during the Southern Dynasties
The Sanjiang Duhu(三江督护)were the general term for the Xijiang Duhu,Nanjiang Duhu, and Dongjiang Duhu, set up by the Southern Dynasties in the Lingnan (岭南).Initially, they participated in quelling rebellions, and later their responsibilities were specifically defined to suppress the Li and Liao tribes. As a type of Duhu, the Sanjiang Duhu became an official position of independent military command in the Southern Dynasties detaching themselves from the Cishi(刺史)in military terms. However,in administrative terms most of the Sanjiang Duhu concurrently served as Taishou(太守),and some Cishi even concurrently held the position of Duhu, achieving the unification of military and civilian leadership.Through an exploration of the jurisdiction regions of the Nanjiang Duhu(南江督护),it is found that the regions of the Sanjiang Duhu do not refer to specific rivers but were regions divided with Guangzhou as the Center. The formation of the Sanjiang Duhu enhanced the central dynasty's control over Lingnan, spurring its development and management, ushering in a new phase of governance.
