The Wujing Zongyao:Bei Fan Di Li(《武经总要·北蕃地理》)chronicles the geography of the Khitan in the northern regions, preserving a comprehensive political division system of the Liao Dynasty, with a temporal demarcation at the tenth year of the Chongxi reign. The Khitan historical materials within this text are eclectic, including Jia Dan's Huanghua Sida Ji(《皇华四达记》)from the Tang Dynasty,as well as the"Travelogues"of the Song Dynasty envoys Wang Zeng,Chao Hui,Xue Ying, and Song Shou during their missions to the Khitan. The content pertaining to the Liao political divisions surpasses the Song Dynasty's understanding of Liao territories, suggesting that the source may not be from Song documents but rather an authentic Khitan indigenous document. An analysis of the background of the compilation of the Wujing Zongyao reveals that its compilation began in the third year of the Qingli reign, coinciding with Zhao Zhizhong(赵至忠)'s defection from the Liao to the Song Dynasty. He had repeatedly offered literary materials to the Song court, among which Lu Ting Za Ji(《虏廷杂记》)was the most important, providing reference material for the compilation of the Bei Fan Di Li at that time.
