Evaluation for Turf Characteristics and Economics Performance of Sod Using Five Types of Base Materials
Developing and applying soilless turf technologies represents a crucial step towards sustainable turf management. This study evaluated the suitability of hybrid bermudagrass for soilless applications by investigating the performance of five different base materials on turfgrass growth rate, quality, and economic indicators. The results showed that straw sod exhibited the fastest stolon expansion rate(0.71 cm/d),while artificial-natural mixed sod achieved the shortest formation time(25 d).All treatments significantly reduced weed quantity and improved stem density, strength of extension, and sod compaction degree.Straw sod had the highest aboveground biomass(4.3 g/dm2).Straw offered the most cost-effective option due to low pro-duction costs and short cycle time, promoting agricultural and forestry residues utilization.Coconut sod exhib-ited high compaction but lower bite degree and higher costs.Artificial-natural mixed sod received the highest comprehensive evaluation, combining rapid establishment time with superior turf quality.
