Clinical observation of the adverse effects of Chinese medicine combined with chemotherapy compared with chemotherapy alone in the treatment of elderly tumor patients aged 70 years and older
Objective To compare the adverse reactions of traditional Chinese medicine combined with chemotherapy and chemotherapy alone in the treatment of elderly patients with malignant tumors aged 70 years and older. Methods Based on a retrospective cohort study,64 patients aged 70 years and older who received chemotherapy in the Department of Oncology,Shu Hospital,Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine from January 1 to December 31,2022 were divided into traditional Chinese medicine combined with chemotherapy group(32 cases)and simple chemotherapy group(32 cases)according to whether they took oral traditional Chinese medicine decoction during chemotherapy. The simple chemotherapy group was treated with western chemical drugs only, and the traditional Chinese medicine combined chemotherapy group was treated with traditional Chinese medicine on the basis of western medicine chemotherapy. The incidence of adverse reactions, subsequent chemotherapy acceptance rate and the decline of KPS score after treatment were compared between the two groups. Results The incidence of adverse reactions, grade Ⅲ and Ⅳ adverse reactions including bone marrow suppression, gastrointestinal reactions, liver function damage and hand-foot syndrome in the traditional Chinese medicine combined with chemotherapy group were significantly lower than those in the simple chemotherapy group, and the acceptance rate of subsequent chemotherapy in the traditional Chinese medicine combined with chemotherapy group was better than that in the simple chemotherapy group(90.63%vs.68.75%).The KPS scores of the two groups decreased after treatment, but the decline of the combination group was better than that of the chemotherapy group. Conclusion The acceptance rate of traditional Chinese medicine combined with chemotherapy is better than that of simple chemotherapy in elderly cancer patients aged 70 years and older.Traditional Chinese medicine combined with chemotherapy can improve the decline of KPS score, and has fewer adverse reactions, and the occurrence of adverse reactions is mild.
