A Review of Urban Forest Researches and Its Future Directions in China
Since the concept of urban forest was introduced into China,the research on urban forest has much achieved and provided important scientific support for land greening and its management.Currently,the research is focused on the following 4 aspects:1)Urban forest structure,landscape pattern analysis and dynamic process;2)Species selection,community structure,configuration modes and establishment/regeneration technique for urban forest;3)Applying tree canopy cover analysis to evaluate the condition of urban forest;and 4)Evaluation of ecological benefits,services and functions of urban forest.This paper holds,after the review and analysis of the connotation and scope of urban forests,that future research on urban forest will be directed a the following 4 areas:1)The research on how to improve the health and sustainable development of urban forests;2)The research on community establishment and management of urban forest based on ecology theories;3)The research on how urban forest mitigate and adapt to climate change;and 4)The research on scientific methods for enhancing both quantity and quality of urban forest and regulating the accounting and monitoring of urban forest sink.Urban forest research is supposed to apply multi-disciplinary technologies to fill the gaps among science,policy and society,thereby meeting the multiple requirements of urban citizens.
