Research on Restorative Benefits of Pocket Parks in Downtown of Shanghai
Urban green spaces(UGSs)play a positive role in improving people's physical and mental health.Micro-green spaces like pocket parks have recently attracted much attention as an effective supplement to large UGSs.This paper selects four types of pocket parks with different functions in Shanghai, and analyzes the relationship between their restorative benefits, environmental factors and users'visiting behavior, with the attempt to provide empirical evidences for the restorative benefits of pocket parks in planning and practices. It is found that children-friendly pocket parks have the best restorative benefits, and the design quality and the landscape elements of pocket parks can relieve people's mental stress to the most, while they have significantly different effects on the restorative benefits of different types of pocket parks. The study also finds that people will have the best restorative benefits when their visiting frequency to sports and fitness pocket parks reaches 4 to 5 times per week,or when the visiting exceeds 2 hours one time in small-scale farm pocket parks. In this sense, the functional characteristics, location conditions and users'needs should be considered when efforts are taken to optimize the restorative benefits of pocket parks, and the focus should be placed on the factors affecting restorative environment.
