Canopy Color Characteristics at Forest Parks in Pearl River Delta
Color,as the primary visual element, plays a crucial role in enhancing forest landscape quality and highlighting regional characteristics. However, most current research focuses on the areas with dramatic color changes, and there are few studies on the regions like the Pearl River Delta, which are characterized by gradual color transitions in forest landscapes. To clarify composition and variation patterns of forest colors under the gradual transition, this study focuses on the color landscape of forests canopy in the Pearl River Delta.Seventy-four plots are selected across seven forest parks, and a total of 1 378 images are captured using drones for regular monitoring throughout the year. The K-Means clustering method is employed to extract color information from the images, coupled with human eye sensitivity,to construct the color palette of forest parks in the region, based on which the forest color characteristics in the region are quantified in terms of color composition and spatial distribution pattern. The results show that:1)The forest colors in the Pearl River Delta can be divided into ten hues of orange,yellow,yellow-green,light green, green, dark green,blue-green,blue,purple,and red,and 90 different colors;2)In terms of color composition, the dominant color is green(63.34% of the area),with light green(14.01% )and yellow-green(10.16% )as auxiliary colors, and orange(6.22% )and yellow(6.28% )as accent colors. The colors are predominated by low saturation(68.48% )and medium brightness(54.00% );and 3)In terms of color landscape pattern, the patch index of orange and yellow as well as of yellow-green and light-green show similar trends in monthly change. The fragmentation of forest colors is higher in January,February, and May,and the patch shapes are most complex in November. In conclusion, the forest color variations in the Pearl River Delta are primarily concentrated in five hues:orange,yellow,yellow-green,light green, and green, which exhibit gradient characteristics in terms of color composition, area proportion, and spatial distribution. The results provide technical support for the creation of a"multi-layered,multi-species and multi-color"forest landscape in the Pearl River Delta and make contributions to the building of the Green Beautiful Guangdong and the Beautiful Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
