Volatile Components of Gardenia Jasminoides J.Ellis and Their Effects on Human Physiological and Psychological Health
As a commonly used ornamental plant,Gardenia Jasminoides J.Ellis emits a rich aroma and has functions of such as environment beautification, bacteria killing, inflammation reduction, and insects killing. It also plays a certain therapeutic role in horticultural therapy. In order to explore the specific health benefits of its aroma to the human body, this paper collects and identifies the volatile components of G.Jasminoides J.Ellis through dynamic headspace bagging method and GC-MS technology, and carries out experiment using brain waves, blood pressure and heart rate as physiological indicators and mood state scale(POMS)as the psychological base. The results show that:1)During the blooming period, there are 84 types of volatile organic compounds in G.Jasminoides J.Ellis, mainly composed of terpenes and esters. The total amount of volatile compounds released during the day shows an increasing trend, while volatile compounds are the most abundant in type(71 types)between 13∶00 and 13∶30 in the afternoon;2)The volatile compounds of G.Jasminoides J.Ellis can reduce human systolic blood pressure and heart rate significantly(P<0.01),insignificantly reduce diastolic blood pressure(P>0.05)and improve concentration and reflexes(P=0.05),and significantly alleviate anxiety and tension(P<0.01);and 3)There are gender differences and duration differences in the health benefits of G.Jasminoides J.Ellis.After smelling the aroma, women can improve their concentration and lower their heart rate, while men can concentrate more and lower their blood pressure.During the afternoon(13∶00-17∶00)and evening(18∶00-22∶00),smelling the aroma leads to the most significant decrease in human blood pressure. In the afternoon(13∶00-17∶00),the θ wave changes the most acutely. It is considered that G.Jasminoides J.Ellis has a good effect on the recovery of human physiological and psychological health. It is suggested that G.Jasminoides J.Ellis should be planted near the places for such as study and work.
