Objective To observe the effect of selenium supplement and drying of staple food on prevention of Kashin-Beck disease among children aged 7-12 years old in Xunyi county,Shaanxi Province.Methods Selenium supplementation and staple food drying measures were adopted in Xunyi county.In 2014(before the implementation of preventive measures)and 2016(2 years after the implementation of preventive measures),children aged 7-12 years old from Xunyi county were taken right-hand X-ray films and samples of food,water and hair.Results The X-ray prevalence of KBD in 7-12 years old children in Xunyi County in 2014 was 9.9%.The selenium contents of flour,hair and water were 7.03±5.94 ng/g,0.24±0.07 μg/g and 0.51± 0.27 ng/mL respectively while 22.43±6.38 ng/g,0.62±0.13 μg/g and 0.75±0.11 ng/mL in control group.The content of T-2 toxin in wheat was 206 ng/g,and the moisture content of wheat was 16%in Xunyi County.The results have been shown that the hair selenium content of children aged 7-12 in Xunyi County was significantly lower than that of children in Xi'an area,and the content of selenium in wheat in Xunyi County was significantly lower than that of in Xi'an area.After selenium supple-mentation and staple food drying for prevention,the selenium content of hair was increased significantly,the content of T-2 toxin(96 ng/g)and ratio of moisture in grain(12%)reached the national standard in prevention group in 2016.Conclusion The environment of Xunyi County is in a state of low selenium,and the prevalence of KBD by X-ray examination is still high.The content of selenium for children increase significantly after taking selenium supplements and staple food drying prevention,and therefore no new cases are reported.
