An investigation of corona loss characteristics of the 750kV bundle conductors in high altitude sandy condition was presented in this paper. Sand particles may influence corona loss characteristics of the bundle conductors of 750kV power transmission lines in Northwestern China, where sandy weather often occurs. Corona loss and discharge intensity of the conductors used in practice LGJ400-50 of the 750kV power transmission lines is measured with fiber-optic corona loss measurement system and UV detector based on the movable corona cage in simulated sandy weather conditions. Corona loss characteristics are analyzed as influenced by wind speed, sand concentration and sand particle size. The test results show that corona discharge becomes stronger in sandy condition. Wind speed in this paper has little influence on corona loss. Corona loss of 750kV power transmission line conductor is found to increase with sand concentration and sand particle size in this paper, when the other parameters are fixed.
