The modular multilevel converter(MMC)gradually turns into one of the most appropriate topologies for high power applications due to its high modularity and low harmonic distortion. As submodule(SM)fails, the SM capacitor voltage and switching frequency in faulty arm will rise, which would increase power losses in faulty arm of the MMC,thus affecting the life of the MMC.This paper proposes a variable execution frequency-based power losses optimization control(VEF-PLOC),which can optimize power losses in faulty arms of the MMC through adjusting execution frequency to modify switching loss in power devices in the MMC under SM faults. The proposed VEF-PLOC can effectively improve the lifetime of the MMC with the optimized power losses in faulty arms in the MMC under SM faults. It is simulated with the professional tool PSCAD/EMTDC,and it is validated on a down-scale MMC prototype. The simulation and experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed VEF-PLOC.
