Progress,Challenges and Prospects of Research on Hydropower Supporting the Flexibility of New Power Systems
The seasonal fluctuation,short-term intermittency and randomness of new energy will lead to severe challenges of flexibility demand and seasonal power supply in new power systems.Chinese industry and academia have developed the concept of"role remaking and functions reinventing of conventional hydropower plants",with the aim of giving full play to China's unique hydropower resource advantages and remaking the hydropower plants as flexibility resources to support the new energy development.This concept has received full attentions by government departments and power companies.Its related theoretical issues have been extensively researched by many scholars,and are still under development.In order to better review and prospect the relevant research results,this paper summarizes the important practical basis for taping and utilizing the hydropower flexibility potential in China.The research results on hydropower supporting the flexibility demands of new power systems are reviewed at three scheduling levels of river basin hydro-wind-solar integrated energy bases,provincial power grid and regional power grid.On this basis,challenges in theoretical research and engineering applications for utilizing hydropower flexibility are extracted.Preliminary solutions to the challenges are also discussed.
